Most businesses are measuring the wrong things. That's not a dig. It's just what happens when dashboards get built around what's easy to track instead of what's worth knowing.
Visits, page views, time on site. These are the numbers that look good in a Monday morning screenshot. They do not tell you whether the business is growing. Funnel analytics is the practice of asking what actually happened after someone landed on the page, and building the measurement system around that question instead.
The number you care about isn't traffic
A page with ten thousand visitors and a 0.3% conversion rate is not performing. A page with eight hundred visitors and a 4% conversion rate is doing real work. Looking at raw traffic in isolation tells you nothing useful about either.
The shift that actually moves things is orienting the measurement system around outcomes. What action matters to your business? A form submission, a phone call, a demo request, a purchase. Those are the events worth building your tracking around. Everything else is context at best and noise at worst.
When the tracking is built around what actually drives revenue, the data starts to tell a real story. Until then, it's just stacking up.
Installed is not the same as configured
GA4 is capable. It's also genuinely confusing out of the box, which is why most businesses set it up once and never revisit it. The default configuration gives you page traffic. That's about it.
A properly configured GA4 tells you which pages lead to conversions and which ones are where the journey quietly ends. It shows where in a form people are abandoning. It shows how a visitor from paid search behaves differently from one who found you through organic. It shows which content pieces are actually influencing a decision, not just getting a click.
The goal is not to track everything. It's to track the right things. A focused setup with clean event mapping is worth more than a messy dashboard that technically captures everything but can't answer a simple question.

Attribution is where confident decisions go to get humbled

Last-touch attribution gives all the credit to the final click before conversion. This makes the blog post that introduced someone to your brand look useless and the branded search they came back through look like a miracle. Neither is accurate.

Blended or data-driven attribution distributes credit based on actual contribution across touch points. It's more accurate, requires meaningful data volume to work well, and is worth building toward.
The honest truth: no model is perfect. Every one of them simplifies a messy reality. What actually matters is having a framework your team uses consistently, understands, and trusts enough to make decisions from. A clear, shared model beats a sophisticated one nobody believes.
UTM governance is unglamorous and non-negotiable
If your GA4 source report shows "direct" traffic accounting for 40% of visits, you have a UTM problem.
UTM parameters are the tags on URLs that tell your analytics where traffic came from. When they're used consistently, you can trace a visit to the exact campaign and piece of content that generated it. When they're not, that traffic evaporates into "direct" and your attribution becomes a fiction.
A team running paid campaigns, sending email newsletters, posting on LinkedIn, and publishing organic content without a UTM governance system will eventually have a data problem that is very hard to untangle. Getting this right doesn't require a complicated system. It requires a clear one: a shared naming convention, a process for tagging links before anything goes out, and periodic audits to catch drift. Once it's in place, you stop thinking about it. When it isn't, it quietly undermines every measurement effort downstream.
A dashboard should make your next move obvious
The most common dashboard problem isn't missing data. It's dashboards built to impress rather than to inform. Lots of visualizations, plenty of numbers, very little clarity on what changed or what to do about it.
The useful ones share a few things: they're organized around business outcomes, not platform metrics. They show trends over time, not just today's snapshot. They surface the questions worth investigating rather than answering questions nobody asked. And anyone on the team making decisions can read them without a data analyst in the room.
A few things worth having in that framework: traffic by channel and how it trends, conversion rates by page and by source, campaign performance tied to actual lead or revenue outcomes, keyword movement for SEO-tracked terms, and technical health flags that surface problems before they show up in rankings.
If a metric on your dashboard can't connect to a decision someone on your team will actually make, it probably doesn't belong there.
Measurement should produce clarity, not more meetings
All of it -- the event tracking, the attribution model, the UTM governance, the dashboard -- exists for one reason: to know what's working, understand why, and have enough confidence in the data to act on it.
When that system is in place, creative becomes sharper because you know what messaging is landing. Paid gets more efficient because you can see which campaigns are actually driving outcomes. The arguments about whether something is working get replaced by conversations about what to do next.
That's the output of a well-built measurement system. Not a prettier report. Faster, better decisions.
